  • ENGLISH TEACHER TRAINER SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM (TEFL ADVISOR)

Grant Description and Purpose

The FSE English Teacher Trainer scholarship program provides qualified TEFL teachers or professors with the opportunity to spend 11 months as Academic Advisors for Fulbright English Teaching Assistants (ETA) and English Teaching Flagship (ETF) participants teaching Grades 1-9 in Taiwan. Advisors work with the American teaching assistants and with Taiwanese Local English Teachers (LETs).

The purpose of the program is to enhance grantees’ professional expertise through visits, observations, consultations, and coordination. By supervising these outstanding American and Taiwanese English teachers, the Advisors contribute to creating a better English learning environment in Taiwan.

 

  •  ENGLISH AS A MEDIUM OF INSTRUCTION (EMI) SPECIALIST & TEACHER TRAINER SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM (EMI ADVISOR)

Grant Description and Purpose

The FSE English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) Specialist & Teacher Trainer scholarship program provides qualified EMI instructors or professors with the opportunity to spend 11 months as EMI Advisors and consultants for FSE / MOE EMI program participants teaching in EMI programs. Advisors also advise and supervise the teaching assistants in the English Teaching Flagship (ETF) program who support and interact with university students.

The program aims to enhance professional expertise through visits, observations, consultations, and coordination with Taiwanese universities that are internationalizing their academic programs. Advisors contribute to creating a better EMI teaching and learning environment in Taiwan and help EMI instructors enhance the quality of their EMI courses.

 

Duration

The duration of each grant is 11 months beginning on August 1 of the grant year, and concluding on June 30 of the grant year. With the Selection Committee's approval, renewal for a second and final 11 months may be considered.

 

Benefits

  • Monthly stipend of NT$65,000 - NT$90,000 (depending on qualifications)
  • Round-trip airfare between Taiwan and the US (for non- Taiwan residents)
  • A settling-in allowance of NT$36,000 upon arrival
  •  National Health Insurance
  • Travel reimbursement for transportation costs incurred in traveling between sites; hotel reimbursement up to NT$3,000  per night for business travel between sites

Eligibility Criteria

TEFL Advisor

A: Applicants with a Master’s degree and TEFL teaching experience

  • Citizens of Taiwan or the U.S.
  • Advanced level of English proficiency
  • Currently teach or conduct research in TEFL in any country, including Taiwan

B: Applicants with a Ph.D. degree:

  • Citizens of Taiwan or the U.S.
  • Relevant fields of English teaching experience for more than 2 years
  • Have held the rank of assistant professor (or its equivalent) or higher for at least two years, and are affiliated with a university or research institution in Taiwan or the U.S.

EMI Advisor

A:  Applicants with a Master’s degree and EMI/international student teaching experience:

  • Citizens of  the U.S.
  • Advanced level of English proficiency
  • Currently teach or conduct research in EMI or international student programs in any country, including Taiwan

B:   Applicants with a Ph.D. degree and EMI/international student teaching experience:

  • Citizens of the U.S.
  • Advanced level of English proficiency
  • Relevant fields of EMI/international student teaching experience for more than 2 years
  • Have held the rank of assistant professor (or its equivalent) or higher for at least two years, and are affiliated with a university or research institution in Taiwan or another English-speaking country

 

Please note that:

  • PhD candidates holding a Master’s degree in Applied Linguistics or Teacher Education with teaching experience are welcome to apply for both the TEFL and EMI Teacher Trainer Scholarship Program.
  • We do not specify any disciplines for the grants because EMI programs are developing in different fields in Taiwan. For EMI advisors who have TESOL/Education background, you will also advise and supervise some ETFs and ETAs in Grades 1-9.

 

Selection Procedure

The Selection Committee reviews all application documents and will notify the candidates of an on-line interview.
