Position
Renton Technical College (RTC) is seeking a dedicated ELA Success Instructor passionate about supporting English Language Acquisition (ELA) students in their orientation class in preparation for their ELA foundation and focus classes. Our transitional studies department (College and Career Pathways) is celebrated for its diverse and dynamic faculty, staff, and student body, reflecting a wide range of cultural backgrounds and experiences. Designed in the spirit of Washington”s College Success classes, this role is essential in providing students with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in their educational journey within our College and Career Pathways department. This an adjunct faculty position contracted on a quarterly basis with expected renewal. This position is represented by the Renton Federation of Teachers (RFT) Employees Association. Credit load will vary depending on need and schedule, the anticipated vacancies are included below. Adjunct faculty are benefits eligible after carrying a half-time load (7.5 credits) for 2+ quarters. A full-time load is 15 credits. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis as needs arise within each department. Deans will evaluate applications periodically and contact candidates as adjunct positions become available. Note that applications may be reviewed at any time while this posting remains active.

Our outstanding college & career pathways program with classes in adult basic education, English as a second language, and GED preparation is available to those who need additional preparation before entering a training program and for those who simply wish to improve their math and English skills. Career Education and apprenticeships degrees round out our offerings.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
The position is active in nature and requires standing, lecturing and demonstration of processes in a classroom environment. The job also requires some sedentary time when performing administrative program functions.
Terms of Employment
In the interest of providing a healthy, safe and secure educational and work environment, and in order to meet the requirements of federal legislation, it is the policy of Renton Technical College to maintain an alcohol and drug-free workplace for our employees and students.
This is an adjunct faculty position contracted on a quarterly basis. Lecture (theory) credits are compensated at $1,058 per credit, which includes scheduled class time and final exam days, in addition to a per credit stipend based on the high demand tier. All guided practice instructional credits for adjunct will be paid with an additional pay factor of 1.33. Future advancement in base salary, up to the current maximum of $1,592 per credit, is based upon a combination of years of service accrued at our college and professional development activity.
Degree Stipend:
Master”s or Doctorate degree stipends are paid on a prorated per credit rate.
The person hired is to provide authorization for employment in the United States. All offers of employment are contingent to background checks, including employment and degree/credential verification. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant's suitability and competence to perform successfully in the position. - Demonstrate multicultural competence (including an awareness and understanding of historically disadvantaged populations) and create an educational and work environment that affirms commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
- Student Orientation: Facilitate orientation class (ELA Success) for new and returning ELA students including seeing classrooms, the library, getting student IDs, and meeting student services staff.
- Technical Support: Guide students in logging into Canvas, using campus resources, understanding program structure and how to manage RTC communication (emails, canvas inbox)
- Policy Education: Educate students on attendance policies, course repeats, academic calendar and other relevant policies. Class schedule modalities & expectations.
- Assessment and Placement: Conduct speaking and writing assessments to determine appropriate placement and registration into subsequent classes in tandem with CASAS scores and scheduling.
- Support the college's mission by creating a learning and work environment of mutual respect and fairness, while encouraging creative and critical thinking. Contribute to the appreciation of diversity and foster a climate of multicultural understanding.
- Provide leadership in working to improve access and successful educational outcomes for underrepresented student populations.
- Assess, monitor, and document student performance.
- Advise students in meeting their educational goals; complete required paperwork and submit required attendance.
- Maintain student records such as grades using the Canvas learning management system.
- Attend scheduled College & Career Pathways department and team meetings as appropriate.
- Fulfill part-time faculty responsibilities in accordance with the negotiated agreement and College policies.
- Support the College's mission by creating a learning environment of mutual respect and fairness, while encouraging creative and critical thinking through an equity lens.
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships with students and staff.
- Communicate professionally and effectively, both orally and in writing, with college employees, departments and outside agencies.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Demonstrated leadership or participation in institutional programs with persons from diverse backgrounds such as sexual orientation, racial, ethnic, religious, linguistic, gender, age, socio-economic, physical, and learning abilities, and a commitment to an inclusive and equitable working / learning environment.
- Bachelor”s degree in Education, TESOL, Linguistics, or a related field. A Master”s degree in a relevant field is preferred.
- At least two years of experience teaching English language learners of different levels, preferably in a Washington State CTC basic education/transitional studies program.
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills. Ability to develop and deliver engaging instructional materials.
- Familiarity with Canvas or similar learning management systems and understanding of best practices in ELA education.
- Experience with CASAS and the Basic Education for Adults (BEdA) system
- Demonstrated commitment to student success and equity in education.
- Experience in curriculum development and assessment design for English language learners.
- Experience or participation with persons from diverse backgrounds such as sexual orientation, racial, ethnic, religious, linguistic, gender, age, socioeconomic, physical and learning abilities, and a commitment to an inclusive and equitable working / learning environment.
- Demonstrated ability to promote universal design and accessibility. Proficiency in (or ability to learn within 6 month of hire) the production of accessibly content, whether print or electronic.
- Assess, monitor, and document student performance.

- Ability to speak a regionally top spoken language other than English is preferred (Spanish, Vietnamese, Russian, Somali, and Chinese).
